How this calculator works

The calculator first works out how many hours you have in a year: working weeks (52 minus weeks off) multiplied by days per week and hours per day. It then applies your billable share, because admin, sales and learning cannot be invoiced. Dividing the yearly income target by the billable hours gives the hourly rate, and multiplying by hours per day gives the daily rate.

Frequently asked questions

What billable share should I use?+

Most freelancers and small agencies bill 50 to 70 percent of their working time. Employees paid by the hour can use 100 percent.

Why do weeks off matter?+

Holidays, sick days and training are still weeks you need income for. Leaving them out makes the rate too low.

Does this include taxes or expenses?+

No. It converts an income target into a rate. Use the Freelance Rate Calculator to add expenses, tax and a buffer.
